As you probably all know, Friday marked the 14th anniversary of September 11th. I was 9 years old 14 years ago and had no concept of the impact terrorism would have on the world. I remember coming home after school that day and watching those planes flying into the Twin Towers. Everyone gathered around the TV, but I couldn’t see what all the fuss was about.
10 years later I went to New York for the first time and visited the 9/11 memorial site. Walking around the huge waterfalls that had been erected in the place of the fallen towers, the sense of loss hit me.
Not only were thousands of lives taken, but America had also lost it’s sense of security. A country which had once seemed indestructible had been penetrated by extremism.
When I returned to New York in 2013, I was glad to see that the reconstruction of the World Trade Center had begun. Of course this will never take the place of the original towers, but America is an expert at starting anew.
Apologies that this isn’t the type of post that you’re used to. However, this week I wanted to pay tribute to the 9/11 victims. If you have any personal experiences of that day, please share below in the comments.
